Kyrenia (Girne), North Cyprus

Kyrenia, also know as Girne in Turkish, is the Tourism Capital of Northern Cyprus. Due to the volumes of tourist pouring in year in and year out, Kyrenia is probably one of the loveliest destinations in all of the Mediterranean.

Kyrenia is popular for its Harbour, hence the name "Habour City". Located at the main city center, this horseshoe-shaped harbour is the location of famous Kyrenia Castle which also contains the remains of a boat is believed to be thousands of years old. Other areas around the habour inlcude cafes, restaurants and bars.

While the harbour remains the center of Kyrenia, there are other interesting tourist attraction sites, such as The Five Finger Mountain range peak or Richard Lionheart’s St.Hilarion Castle.

Kyrenia itself offers a wide range of guesthouses and hotels, such as the Mountain View Hotel, located just 3 miles west of Kyrenia. There are very exquisite restaurants everywhere which serve both local and international cuisines. The Local restaurants usually offer mezzes, a very popular local recipe. It is said that once in North Cyprus, you should try the messes at least before you leave. The mezze is actually a collection of little appetizers with by kebabs or fish, and followed by some desert, if you have the stomach for it. Some restaurants even offer home-style cooking, serving Cypriot home meals, such as local vegetable dishes like molohiya or kolokas.
